Welcome to Play Up: Jazz, Wigmore Hall’s online jazz resource for schools. This site is designed for key stage 3 classes, helping teachers and their students creatively explore the building blocks of jazz.

The resource:

  • Introduces key elements of jazz including the 12 bar blues and modes
  • Provides accessible ideas for leading rhythm games in class
  • Gives an introduction to improvisation on percussion and melodic instruments
  • Introduces jazz song and provides suggestions for interactive warm up singing activities

You do not need to be a jazz specialist to use this resource with your class – all activities are supported by clear teacher’s notes and downloadable audio music files.

To get started: select a topic area on the right to explore the interactive activities. There are four different activities for each topic which you are advised to work through in order.

Teachers: download the Teachers' Pack – this is designed to complement the activities on the website with background information and ideas for how to use and build on the activities with your class. The pack also includes an introduction to jazz, written scores for all the exercises and suggested further listening activities.

CD Rom: many of the activities included on this site have been adapted from our Jazz CD Rom which includes many other fun and interactive activities. It is available to buy through our website: www.wigmore-hall.org.uk
